Intellectual Piracy and its importance to FDI

The Tale of One and Ra.One

Yash Patnaik: A bollywood man with a script (he claims) who conceptualised Ra.One (again, he claims!) Yash, Producer & Director and his Beyond Entertainment had penciled a superhero 'One' in 2006

Ra.One : Directed, Produced and played by Hart G>one, Sri Sri Shahrukh khan oops, Red Chillies Entertainment, Mr Juhi Chawla and Mrs Juhi Chawla (also of KKR)

KKR: Shahrukh's IPL Team, unconnected to the thought processes in this article ( i know, ignorant little me)

DNA: Claims to know the coming boom  in entertainment with an entertainment section every day of the week, and good business content for the financially minded, precluded HT from launching in Bangalore??

The Script Lifting mania expose: A habitual showbiz - media (dis)connection installed and exclusively run in high society and print circles ( now Network TV and zoom) south of the vindhyas before every Olympics for which India is unprepared, to showcase that Intellectual protection for Creative work, the big issue for Corporatisation of Film indutry, is quite a non starter and has many unsavory side-effects

Side effects: Fittingly the last of the rom-coms, with alternative actors Rahul and a certain Ms Sherawat - Star Gold HD, right  - now for those  in India)

Meanwhile the other knowldege instrument used by creative industry folk, i.e. the sequel , is up for Dabanng without a moustache for Salman

Is Yash Patnaik and golf conversations the ticket?

Should piracy and infringement of copyright not be an important coffee table conversation again? Also the morning's Golf conversations include, the decline of Bangalore in IT, namma Metro, 7 km run opened yesterday, the sun rises from the west in Timberlake's new movie "In time" and I could be doing a better job in my writing with all the subject matrerial available. Leadership of "industry" on the other hand is busy making asses of themselves with absurdities in propositions and density of obdurance in presenting unworthy customs for sale in the consulting and retail industry. That would translate to heavy, expensive movies having run out of rom coms in Bollywood.

And as the rom com era moves on to morose, more special effects and action, (it moved on back in 2005, then there was network TV), the techno funk produces the script lifting mania expose , tried earlier by journalists in 1990 and maybe 1995 ( I am not sure about the year) before Will Smith lost it to Bollywood in "Partner"

Data on Script Lifting by Yash Patnaik: Yash Patnaik got a court to ask Red Chillies to put $200,000 in escrow if they want Ra.One with 40 HD prints for Dubai(GCC) to release in time on Diwali

Indian Entertainment Giants have made some strides with a direct connection to LA and London wince 2000. That industry this time thus may not survive intellectual parasitism on global prints (movies like Avatar cannot even be conceptualised here - though that concept was an oft repeated 'fairy tale') Well, Latam prints 'inspired' by movies in the West have even won Oscars for handling sensitivities and even Slumdog Millionaire is being freely used in the West since 2007 india's entries to the oscars have still encounterd 2 part prejudice and 9 parts fantastic propositions by the indian industry thence allowing such a great subject, should ra.one be allowed to be released, solved in a national khichri, Twitterers, please prey on this too...india's first superhero movies..without a tweet.

Bigger Deals by bollywood and indians..

A very encouraging fact just preceding the global crisis unfolding in the public arena were deals with Jerry Bruckheimer, Spielberg and many global SFX studios, not to forget animation which was also a big "job generation" engine in the country.

Today it is short films and documentaries as Global Awards hanker for Diversity of top notch content and India keeps trying to get an Oscar evey year incl the inimitable Aamir, starting with Lagaan. None of it came to a Dog's bone worth of recognition and Partner's original script owned by Will Smith's production team even got away with its adaptation in Hindi.

With Ra One released globally,

A certain Yash Patnaik has had a better chance with getting the 'first injunction' billing the court's escrow account ot $200k for the release(got it first on NDTV night out). However, whether Robot and Ra.One are originals or not, they are definitely just intermediate products of a few studios that finally have access to global technologies in SFX and more. What expat talent will come next with is global best practices. while Global Best practices will be key to turning around our money and ticket power in Bollywood to a truly global phenomenon ( bigger than it is today, after converting in suitably Dollar or euros)

A few best practices that go into a Global film product:

A. An indian audience: We have that, in every major global port, and it is important for the Indian industry

B. Global appeal: the Best in Sci fi, animation and special effects cannot shut that gaping hole between Gen X sensibilities and Bollywood's predilections, the improvements in the last 10 years have helped but not touched that global nerve, in a way, heightening the gap

C. Aamir try again! -It is not Kjo and SRK, it is also not Ab Deol and Salman thankfully never tries...hardly Aamir, it was just a small maybe - you could! (More will come esp the Piggy Chops and the Kats that will try to nderstand that well

D. Family fare wins..At the opscars, at the global theaters, it can be fun, it can be sad, it should be sensitive and it should be for the family

All of these have always been there in an indian masala chat, but we still just evolve instead of metamorphosing into a global product..that and more of that insight we provide..

While One and Ra.One should be easy to split as the name changes it all, this stub of a story, while being critical to the Industry's fortunes is reduced to an irritant by the lack of any media cirrcus ahead of the film's release while it could have been discussed in much more detail with all the issues around it getting fair attention that the miniscule comparing of microscopic ascribing of character flaws to One vs Ra.One ..

On Friday, a division bench of chief justice Mohit Shah and justice Roshan Dalvi asked the defendants —Khan's production house Red Chillies Entertainment and Eros Entertainment — to deposit the amount, observing that prima facie, there seemed to be a copyright violation. The court will hear the case in November. However, if the defendants fail to deposit the money on Saturday, an injunction against the movie's October 26 release would become operational.(HT)
