The Anna Phenomenon
The tried and probably untested police bureaucracy fell flat on its face today in New Delhi as it assumed Sec 144 powers and pushed another Civil Disobedience Movement leader Anna Hazare into Prson. Hours later even as the government tried to get Anna released, Anna put his foot down and stayed inside jail as per the announced remand of 7 days under the quoted laws for limited gatherings. Seemingly 22 conditions were imposed under the restricting clause as extended to many protests feared of turning violent, though such was not the case.
History is again in the making after the Government had seemingly won the battle after giving the Civil Society leaders equal participation in the formation of the Lokpal Bill against corrupion in Government. Among 6 umet Ldemands of Anna is a clause letting the Lokpal jurisdiction over the Prime Minister as the head of the executive, and more such clauses which the Civil Society teams felt would not be misused and were required to alleviate entreched corruption. With the inprecipitaste police action we have another Mahatma in the making
